Only a short walk (or stumble) from Lagnakeil, we have a chat with Linda - owner of our local haunt, The Barn Bar...

When did The Barn Bar open?
It opened back in the early 80s when the farm first diversified into holiday accommodation. The Barn Bar initially served just Cologin’s resident holidaymakers but word quickly spread and soon it opened its doors to non-residents as well.

How would you describe The Barn Bar?
Unique! So different from today’s ‘themed’ pubs – the building is an original old cattle byre and the slate cattle stalls are still in situ. We are more pub than restaurant during the week and more restaurant than pub during the weekends! There are not a lot of tables (there’s not a lot of space) and the bar can get very busy at the weekends – especially on Sunday afternoons when we host local musicians for a folk music jamming session. Fortunately we now have a covered area outside with a big wood burning stove to give us a bit more space for dogs and children.

Why do you think it's so popular with locals?
Everyone is welcome – you can come in wellies, bring the weans and eat great homecooked food and lots of it. Good prices for a rural restaurant and bar and a varied range of whiskies, wines and real ales from Fyne Ales brewery. It also saves the drive into Oban – most of our locals stagger home by torchlight across the hills (it’s just a short walk up the glen from Lagnakeil so no need to drive as long as you don’t wear heels!)

What is your favourite thing about The Barn Bar?
The interaction and banter between our locals and holiday makers and meeting so many different breeds of dog! Our locals are rightly proud of Oban and Lerags Glen and they take great delight in sending visitors off to visit all their favourite spots.

What is your favourite thing about Oban?
The views out over the bay from McCaig’s Tower! There’s no place like it!
